colloquialisms,ontheotherhand,arefamiliarwordsandidiomsthatareunderstoodbyalmostallspeakersofalanguageandusedininformalspeechorwriting,butnotconsideredappropriateformoreformalsituations.almostallidiomaticexpressionsarecolloquiallanguage.slang,however,referstowordsandexpressionsunderstoodbyalargenumberofspeakersbutnotaeptedasgood,formalusagebythemajority.
