Give them a short deadline to work out what they are going to say.

4. Ask the two larger groups to present their conversations to each other.

A Presentation

1. Draw a table on the board with three columns. Write a different experiment in each: a little water once a day, a lot of water once a week, a little water once a month. Bring in three plant pots with soil in them.

2. (Books closed.) Tell the pupils to an experiment is when we change something to see what happens. Ask

the pupils to look at the board and tell you what is changed in each of the three experiments. (the frequency is changed, e.g. from once a day to once a week and the amount of water is changed).

3. Tell the pupils to guess what will happen. Put today’s date and a date one month later than today’s date on the board how they think the plants be like? Will they be big and tall? Or will they be short and small? Get the pupils to draw in the columns on the board how they think the plants will look after one month. Do not rub these off yet.

4. Revise the adjective quick and teach the adverb quickly by walking quick and saying I am walking quickly. Teach the adverb slowly in the same way. Ask How quickly will the plants grow? Point to the different plants drawn on the board and ask will this one grow quickly? Will grow slowly? For the third experiment teach the word die. Tell the pupils the plant will not be able to grow.

A Presentation

1. If possible, arrange a lesson in the playground or the hall. Bring traffic cones to class, or make a simple roadway using chairs. Make tables with the names of places in a town, e.g. Post Office, a restaurant, a museum, a shopping mall, etc. and labels for the names of the streets. Put them around the simple grid road layout out you have made with chairs or cones. You can also draw on playground surface with chalk. Alternatively, draw a map on the board or enlarge the one on page 55 and display it.

Part E

1 Play the tape and ask the pupils to listen to the sound and the words. Make sure that the pupils are producing a schwa sound.

2 Say the words slowly and clearly. Check that the pupils are saying the sound correctly.

3 Point to the pictures and check that the pupils can say the words without your model.

4 Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette again. Ask the pupils to listen to and say the rhyme.

5 Ask them to listen to the four words at the bottom of the page and to circle the words with the same letters and sound. Get the pupils to repeat the rhyme.

Part F

a) Tell the pupils to find out where the bus stops to different places are on the map. They should make sure that they know the names of the roads and the places the bus stops are next to.

b) Ask the pupils to circle one of the places in the box. They will find out where the place is and write for a friend how to get there.

c) The pupils work out how to get to the bus stop for the place they want to go from the ‘you are here’ spot on the map. They write the directions for how to get to the correct bus stop.

d) Tell the pupils to role-play a tourist and a local person. The tourist asks Where’s the bus stop? The local person tells them how to get to a particular bus stop. The pupil playing the role of the tourist then guesses where the bus goes to from that stop.

e) Ask the pupils to circle one of the places in the box. They will find out where the place is and write for a friend how to get there.

f) The pupils work out how to get to the place from the ‘You are here’ spot on the map. They write how to get there without mentioning the name of the place.

g) Tell the pupils to role-play a tourist and a local person. The tourist asks Can you tell me the way? The local person tells them how to get to the place they chose with mentioning the name. The pupil playing the role of the tourist then guesses the place.

h) The pupils find out interesting places to visit and useful bus stops in their area. They draw a simple map with the names of the main roads on it and display pictures of the interesting things to see and do. This could be a project.

B Part G

1. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette for the pupils to listen to the chant.

2. Play the cassette again and encourage the pupils to point to the methods of transport as they’re mentioned in the chant.

3. Tell the pupils to work in small groups to practise different verses. Each group chants their verse in turn.

C Part H

Think about it and write the answer.

我觉得这课对于学生来说比较难。关于方向性的问题，小孩子比较糊涂，有时候左右都分不太清楚。特别是要看地图说去哪地方要怎么走对学生来说不是简单的事情，在做B2的时候学生与到了困难。老师应指着地图分析给学生听，练得多学生自然觉得容易一些了，原来也不是那么难。

1. Bring in photos, greeting cards, banners and other decorations for Easter, the Dragon Boat Festival, Halloween, Christmas and Chinese New Year.

2. (Books closed.) Revise the names of the months, by asking the pupils When’s your birthday? Write the names of the months in groups of three aording to the seasons, starting with March, April and May.

3. Ask the pupils about the seasons by pointing to a group of three months and asking Which season is this? This revises the use of which taught in the previous unit.

4. Ask When is Chinese New Year? Explain that Chinese New Year is one of the festivals we celebrate in the year. Ask the pupils to tell you what other festival they know the name of in English. Ask When is Christmas.

5. Show the photos, cards and /or decorations. Teach the other festivals and the phrases for what we do then, i.e. eat chocolate eggs, watch boat races, go trick or treat, get presents, get lucky money using the things you have brought in.

6. Ask the pupils to you words they know for things they see ad do at these festivals. Aept all relevant words in this brainstorming activity and write them on the board.

7. Show Transparency. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette and point to the speech bubbles. Ask the pupils to repeat after the cassette.

Practice

1. (Books opens.) Show Transparency. Show the small pictures of how people celebrate the different festivals. Revise the phrases and ask Do you … at …?

2. Read the conversation between koko and Pat. Ask the pupils to repeat the conversation after you.

3. Ask the pupils to work in pairs to role-play Pat and Koko and ask about the other festivals.

More to do

Ask the pupils to bring in photos of themselves and their family at different festivals. They display the photos and write captions for them, e.g. At Christmas we get presents.
