inpotentialfoodvalue,however,planktonfaroutweighsthatofthelandgrasses.onescientisthasestimatedthatwhilegrassesoftheworldproduceabout49billiontonsofvaluablecarbohydrateseachyear,thesea'splanktongeneratesmorethantwiceasmuch.despiteitsenormousfoodpotential,littleeffectwasmadeuntilrecentlytofarmplanktonaswefarmgrassesonland.nowmarinescientistshaveatlastbeguntostudythispossibility,especiallyasthesea'sresourcesloomevenmoreimportantasameansoffeedinganexpandingworldpopulation.nooneyethasseriouslysuggestedthat"plankton-burgers"maysoonbeepopulararoundtheworld.asapossiblefarmedsupplementaryfoodsource,however,planktonisgainingconsiderableinterestamongmarinescientists.oypeofplanktonthatseemstohavegreatharvestpossibilitiesisatinyshrimp-likecreaturecalledkrill.growingtotwoorthreeincheslong,krillprovidesthemajorfoodforthegreatbluewhale,thelargestanimaltoeverinhabittheearth.realizingthatthiswhalemaygrowto100feetandweigh150tonsatmaturity,itisnotsurprisingthateachonedevoursmorethanoonofkrilldaily.
