Our neighbour’s son was getting married at an out-of-town church, and my husband and I were invited. We immediately rushed out to a store, and I bought a nice pink dress with a jacket. The dress was a little tight, but I had a month to go before the June 30 wedding and I would lose a few pounds.
June 29 came and, of course, I hadn’t lost a single pound; in fact I had gained two. But I figured a nice new girdle (紧身内衣) would cure everything. So on our way out of the city we stopped once again at the store. I ran in and told the clerk I needed a large-size girdle. The shop assistant found the box with the described girdle marked “LG”, and asked if I would like to try it on. “Oh, no, a large one will fit just right. I needn’t try it on.”
The next morning was rather hot, so I waited to get dressed until about 45 minutes before time to go. I opened the box only to find a new girdle in a small size. Since it was too late to find another one and the dress wouldn’t fit right without a girdle, a fight broke out in the hotel room between me and the girdle. Have you ever tried to shake 20 pounds of potatoes into a five-pound bag? That’s it. Finally my husband, laughing like crazy, got hold of each side and shook me down into it. At once I put on the pink dress, which didn’t match my red face well, and was ready to go.
Finally we got to the church. I heard one of the people say that they were having a High Mass. I turned to my husband and asked, “What is a High Mass?” He shrugged his shoulders.
Unfortunately, I learned that this particular mass would last one hour, twenty-two minutes and eight and one half seconds --- the priest (神父) was going to bless everything except my girdle.

Living a healthy lifestyle lies in forming the right eating habits. Here are some of the good habits you can develop when it es to healthy eating.
Drink plenty of water. You must drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. You may need even more water if you are in a hot environment or if you are exercising.
Eat breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A recent study has shown that those who eat breakfast will consume an average of 100 calories less during the day than their colleagues who skipped breakfast. They will also be able to concentrate better.
Don’t skip lunch. If you do so, your blood sugar level will drop and your metabolism (新陈代谢) will slow down. When you get home you are starving and eat everything you can find.
We all need to snack from time to time, but please choose your snacks carefully. In fact, it’s a good idea to eat two healthy snacks besides your three main meals. Choose healthy snacks like fruits and vegetables, low fat yogurt, cottage cheese with apple sauce, and so on.
Eat your fruit and vegetables. We should eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Take a piece of fruit for a snack, add some banana and raisins to your favourite breakfast cereal, have a salad with lunch, and eat at least one vegetable at dinner each night.
Do not eat your dinner too late. Try to eat dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed. This will give your body a chance to digest most of the food before you rest for the next 8 hours. While the history of technology can be traced along many lines, one of the most intriguing (引人入胜的) development is that of photo technology, the technology of light. From the prehistoric invention of fire to laser beams (激光束) and fiber optics (光纤), light has “continually oupied the minds of inventors”. Their inventions fall into two groups: the use of light to help us see better and more interestingly, the use of light for purposes of munication.
The use of light for municating is one of the major directions that technology has taken ever since the middle of the nieenth century. From still photography to motion pictures to television (with a development from black-and-white to color imagery in each), photo technology has had a great effect upon mass munication and mass education. Unlike the printed word, visual images have more impact because they are more immediate: They copy reality in a way that the printed word cannot. Unlike letter shapes, they are not abstract; unlike words, they require no symbolic interpretation by the mind. bined with the widespread and uniform spreading of such images, photo technology affects the thinking of vast audiences and shapes their view of reality.
Millions of Americans are affected by the mercially-inspired electronic manipulation (操作) of artificial images. We call it “entertainment” and can’t wait to get more.
As the number of mercially available television channels grows, the viewer’s freedom of choice increases, but so does the burden of that choice. Increasingly he is faced with a sea of information and is asked to make quick choices.
More significantly, the ease and rapidity of mass munication has created a supply of information greater than it can readily be absorbed. Flooded in the sea of information, the individual struggles to swim through it.
41. It can be learned about the technology of light from the first paragraph that _____.
A. its mere practical use is to enable people to see well
B. it achieved a remarkable development in the early nieenth century
C. its development is related to the study of the history of technology
D. it has aroused the interest of inventors ever since ancient times
42. Aording to the passage, visual images differ from the printed words in that _____.
A. they have much deeper meanings
B. they have a greater immediate influence upon the viewer
C. they fail to produce a beneficial effect upon youngsters
D. they enable the viewer to use his imagination fully
43. It can be learned from the passage that with the development of photo technology, _____.
A. more and more people seem to prefer TV programs to reading activities
B. the number of TV viewers has bee greater than that of film goers
C. more and more television channels are opened
D. it takes less time for a new idea to be absorbed
44. The underlined word “impact” is most probably equal to _____.
A. influence B. effort C. value D. audience
45. The paragraph is mainly about _____.
A. the speed of mass munication
B. the influence of light on munication
C. the history of technology
D. the number of television channels

Girls Are Equal to Boys in Science
Two American girls won $100,000 in a petition in math, science & technology this year and they prove that girls are equal in science to boys.
Although subjects such as math and science may be difficult for girls as well as for boys, girls can also learn science well if they get interested. It is found that girls enjoy science and technology as much as boys. For example, as a woman scientist, Madam Curie won two Nobel prizes. Li Jia, my desk mate, is often the top student in math tests.
In my opinion, it is not right for girls to think that they are worse at science than boys. They should be confident that they can also learn math and science well if they work hard. On the other hand, teachers should give enough attention to girls in these subjects. If teachers encourage girls often in class, girls will realize that math and science are not male subjects.
