wearingthevolunteeruniformandthevolunteerareditationcard,admiredbyothers,ifeltsneakyalittleproud.meanwhileialsofeltagreatresponsibilityfallingonmyshoulderknowingthatvolunteers’wordsandbehaviorscouldaffectforeignguests’impressiononchina.asiwasavolunteerforaommodation,mypostwasinafour-starhotel.therewereplayersoffourteamsformchina,france,japan,czechoslovakialivingthere.allofthemareparticipantsofthebaseball.actually,mostofthetime,weservedasinterpretersforthoseworkinginthelobby.forexample,whentheplayerswantedtogooutforshopping,wewouldcallataxiforthemandtoldthetaxidriverwheretogo.while,thereissomethingworthwhiletobementionedthatmostofthevolunteersareenglishmajorsandmostoftheplayerscouldspeakenglishverywellexceptjapanesecontestants.paredwithjapaneseplayers,wehadlessdifficultymunicatingwithfrenchplayersandczech.irememberedthatonceimisunderstoodoneofthejapaneseplayers’requestsof“callup”for“cupof”,andifeltsoembarrassedthatievenwantedtocry.gradually,ilearnedtobemorecarefullywhentalkingtothenonenglishnativespeakers.duringtheeventlastingforlessthan15days,themostimpressiveexperiencewasthatitook3ofthejapaneseplayerstothebeijingzoo.asthezooisnotfarfromthehotel,wewalkedthere.ontheway,theyaskedmeaboutthebeggarsonthestreetintheirjust-so-soenglish,anditriedmybesttoexplain,andevenputtingmymouthintomymouth,indicatingthattheydidnothaveenoughtoeat.buttheystilldidnotgetme,whichwasreallyirritating.reflectingthat,iregretididnotlearnjapanesehardenough.thesedays,wehavebeenstudyingthenovelwuthingheightswrittenbyemilybronte,andoneofthecluesistheidentityofcatherine,whetherheathclifforedgarthatshereallylove.asahumanbeing,themostimportantthingistoidentifywhoweare,soshouldwestudents.livinginamixedsociety,havingadefiniteknowledgeofself-identitymattersalot.asacivilian,knowingwhatwereallyshoulddocanhaveagreatimpactonbothourselvesandthesocialcivilization.
