IgottoknowhimpersonallylastsemesterwhenhewastakingthecourseofSpecialTopicsonInternationalFinancethatIwasteaching.Intheclass,heshowedgreatinterestineconomics.Hestudiedconscientiouslyandoftentalkedwithmeaftertheclassaboutthequestionsthathehadeacrossinhisreadings.Oncewhenwetalkedaboutthecountry'songoingrestructuringofitstaxsystem,hedelvedintotheincreasingcostoftaxevasion.Wethendiscussedseveralmethodsofcalculatingthecost.Aswetalked,Ifoundthathewasveryskilledinexpressinghisideasthroughdiagrammatiurvesandmathematics.Recognizingthatthegovernment'sattitudestoactsoftaxevasionwillaffectnotonlypeople'sbehaviorbutalsothecostoflevyingtaxes,hesawpossiblesolutionstotheproblemintheGameTheory.Iencouragedhimtopursuethisidea.Hesaidhedidn'tknowmuchabouttheGameTheoryandproceededtoborrowsomeessaysbyNashfromme.Hethusleftmewithadeepimpression.

Studyingwithconscientiousness,Mr.Huioftencameupwithcreativeideas.Unlikesomeotherstudents,hestudiednottojustpasstheexamsbuttoreallyimprovehisknowledgeandexpertise.Hestandsoutamonghisfellowclassmateswithanunmistakablethirstfenuineunderstandingofthecountry'seconomicrealitiesandproblems.Thathaswonhimappreciationfromnotjustmebutmycolleaguesaswell.Buthediddowellinexamstoo.Inthefinalexamoflastsemester,hegotahighscoreof90formycourse.

Heoftentalkswithmeabouthisidealtobeeaneconomist.Tohelpquenchhisthirstforknowledge,Ihavelentmanyofmyownbookstohimandtutoredhiminhisself-studyprogram.Hehasbeenmuchmoreengrossedindoingindependentresearchthanpreparingforexams,buthisgradesstillkeephimrankedamongthetop25%ofhisclass.Ithinkheisaveryintelligentyoungfellow.

Mr.HuihasagoodmandoftheEnglishlanguage.Asheiswellacquaintedwithme,hehasoftenhelpedmeinmyownresearchbytranslatingsomeEnglishessaysthatIamtoobusytotranslate.Histranslationsareusuallyquitegood.HisoralEnglishisgoodtoo.paredwithotherChinesestudentswhomaybeapplyingtoyourprogram,IthinkMr.Huishouldbeconsideredmorefavorably.
