The American newspaper has been around for about three hundred years. In 1721, the printer James Franklin, Benjamin's older brother, started the New England Courant, and that was what we might recognize today as a real newspaper. He filled his paper with stories of adventure, articles on art, on famous people, and on all sorts of political subjects.
Three centuries after the appearance of Franklin's Courant, few believe that newspapers in their present printed form will remain alive for long. Newspaper panies are losing advertisers, readers, market value, and, in some cases, their sense of purpose at a speed that would not have been imaginable just several years ago. The chief editor of the Times said recently, "At places where they gather, editors ask one another, 'How are you?', as if they have just e out of the hospital or a lost law case. "An article about the newspaper appeared on the website of the Guardian, under the headline "NOT DEAD YET."
Perhaps not, but the rise of the Inter, which has made the daily newspaper look slow and out of step with the world, has brought about a real sense of death. Some American newspapers have lost 42% of their market value in the past three years. The New York Times pany has seen its stock(股票) drop by 54% since the end of 2004, with much of the loss ing in the past year. A manager at Deutsche Bank suggested that stock-holders sell off their Times stock. The Washington Post pany has prevented the trouble only by changing part of its business to education: its testing and test-preparation service now brings in at least half the pany's ine. 74. What can we learn about the New England Courant?

B. They care a lot about each other's health.
C. They stop doing business with advertisers.

She had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart.She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful brown haired, freckle-faced image of innocence.Outside, it was pouring so heavily.
We all stood there just inside the door of the Wal-Mart.We waited, some patiently, others annoyed because nature messed up their hurried day.I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world.
Her voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance(昏昏欲睡)we were all caught in."Mom, let's run through the rain," she said.
"No, honey. We'll wait until it slows down a bit," Mom replied.
This young child waited about another minute and repeated: "Mom, let's run through the rain."
" We'll get soaked if we do," Mom said.
"No, we won't, Mom.That's not what you said this morning," the young girl said as she tore at her Mom's arm.
" This morning? When? Did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?"
"Don't you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, If God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!"
The entire crowd stopped dead silent.I dare say you couldn't hear anything but the rain.We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes.Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.
Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child's lifetime when innocent trust can be developed so that it will bloom into faith."Honey, you are absolutely right.Let's run through the rain.If get wet, well maybe we just need washing," Mom said. Then off they ran.
We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they rushed past the cars and they held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, I did.I ran.I got wet.I needed washing.
You may lose your material possessions, your money and even your health, but no one can ever take away your precious memories. So don't fet to make time and take the opportunities to make memories.

It was once thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and/or heavy automobile traffic. Today, we know that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is actually worldwide. On several oasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the entire eastern half of the United States and led to health warnings even in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be affected by air pollution. Some scientists feel that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a “greenhouse effect" - holding in heat reflected from the earth and raising the world's average temperature. If this view is correct and the world's temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be under water.
Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particulate (颗粒) matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth's temperature ─ a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to new ice age and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. At present we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report prepared by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very likely). Perhaps, if we are very lucky, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world's temperature will stay about the same as it is now.
55. As is pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution ______.
A. affected the entire eastern half of the United States
B. existed merely in urban and industrial areas
C. had damaging effects on health
D. caused widespread damage in the countryside
56. As far as the greenhouse effect is concerned, the author ______.
A. is uncertain of its ourrence
B. thinks that it will destroy the world soon
C. rejects it as being ungrounded
D. shares the same view with the scientists
57. The underlined word “offset" in Para. 2 could best be replaced by______.
A. catch up with B. slip into C. set up D. make up for
58. This passage is mainly concerned with ______.
A. the greenhouse effect B. the potential effect of air pollution
C. the burning of fossil fuels D. the possibility of a new ice age
C
One night recently, I was driving down a two-lane highway at about 60 miles an hour. A car approached from the opposite direction at about the same speed. As we passed each other, I caught the other driver’s eye for only a second. I wondered whether he might be thinking, as I was, how dependent we were on each other at that moment. I was relying on him not to fall asleep, not to be put off by a phone conversation, not to cross over into my lane and bring my life to a sudden end. Though we had never spoken a word to each other, he relied on me in just the same way.
Multiplied a million times over, I believe that is the way the world works. At some level, we all depend upon one another. Sometimes that dependence requires us simply not to do something like crossing over the double yellow line. And sometimes it requires us to act cooperatively, with friends or even with strangers.
As technology shrinks our world, the need increases for cooperative action among nations. In 2003, doctors in five nations were quickly anized to identify the SARS virus, which saved thousands of lives. The threat of international terrorism has shown itself to be a similar problem, one requiring team action by police and intelligence forces across the world. We must recognize that our fates are not ours alone to control.
In my own life, I’ve put great stock in personal responsibility. But, as time has passed, I’ve also e to believe that there are moments when one must rely upon the good faith and judgment of others. So, while each of us faces the case of driving alone down a dark road, what we must learn is that the approaching light may not be a threat, but a shared moment of trust.
59. The author considers it very important ______.
A. to share trust and cooperation B. to drive with a pany
C. to gain certain responsibility D. to have personal independence
60. The author said that they depended on each other in the same way because ______.
A. he might be killed out of the other’s careless driving
B. they both drove their car at a terrific speed
C. the approaching car was very dangerous
D. it was dark and the road was not wide enough
61. The need for cooperation increases because ______.
A. certain viruses can spread in a quick way
B. the world has bee much more dangerous
C. terrorism can happen everywhere and every day
D. peoples’ fates can’t be controlled by themselves
62. We can infer from the last paragraph that the author has ______.
A. believed in one’s own personal responsibility
B. had aomplished a change on his viewpoint of life
C. counted upon himself alone in everything
D. had no trust in others’ good faith and judgment
D
There is a famous story about British poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He was writing a poem when he was interrupted by a knock at the door.
This was an age before telephones.Someone was delivering a message. When Colcridge got back to his poem, he had lost his inspiration. His poetic mood had been broken by the knock on his door. His unfinished poem, which could otherwise have been a masterpiece, would now never be more than a fragment(片段).
This story tells how unexpected munication can destroy an important thought, which brings us to the cell phone.
The most mon plaint about cell phones is that people talk on them to the annoyance of people around them. But more damaging may be the cell phone’s disruption of our thoughts.
We have already entered a golden age of little white lies about our cell phones, and this is by and large a healthy, productive development." I didn't hear it ring" or " I didn't realize my cell phone had shut off" are among the lies we tell to give ourselves space where we’re beyond reach.
The notion or idea of being unreachable is not a new concept-we have "Do Not Disturb" signs on the doors of hotel rooms. So why must we feel guilty when it es to cell phones? Why must we apologize if we decide to shut off the phone for a while?
The problem is that we e from a long-established tradition of difficulty with distance munication.Until the recent mass deployment(配置) of cell phones, it was easy to municate with someone next to us or a few feet away, but difficult with someone across town, the country or the globe. We came to take it for granted.
But cell phones make long-distance munication mon, and endanger our time by ourselves. Now time alone, or conversation with someone next to us which cannot be interrupted by a phone, is something to be cherished.Even cell phone devotees, myself usually included, can't help at times wanting to throw their cell phones away, or curse(诅咒) the day they were invented.
But we don't and won't, and there really is no need. All that's required to take back our private time is a general social recognition that we have the right to it.
In other words, we have to develop a healthy contempt for the rings of our phones.Given the case of making and receiving cell phone calls, if we don’t talk to the caller right now, we surely will shortly later.
A cell phone call deserves no greater priority(优先权)than a random word from a person next to us.Though the call on my cell phone may be the one-in-a-million from Steven Spielberg, who has finally read my novel and wants to make it his next movie. But most likely it is not, and I'm better
off thinking about the idea I just had for a new story, or the pizza I’ll eat for lunch.
63. What does the writer thinks about people telling "white lies" about their cell phones?
A. It is a way of signaling that you don’t like the caller.
B. It is natural to tell lies about small things.
C. We should feel guilty when we can't tell the truth.
D. It is basically a good way to protect one's privacy.
64. What's the point of the story about poet Coleridge in the first three paragraphs?
A. To direct readers' attention to the main topic.
B. To show how important inspiration is to a poet.
C. To emphasize the disadvantage of not having a cell phone.
D. To encourage readers to read the works of this poet.
65. Aording to the author, what is the most annoying problem caused by cell phones?
A. People get so bothered by the cell phone rings that they fail to notice anything else.
B. Cell phones interrupt people’s private time.
C. People feel guilty when they are not able to answer their cell phones.
D. With cell phones it is no longer possible to be unreachable.
66. What does the underlined word “contempt” probably mean?
A. Habit. B. Value. C. Like. D. Disrespect.

I live in the land of Disney, Hollywood and year - round sun.You may think people in such an attractive, fun - filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness.
Many intelligent people still think fun equals happiness. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in mon.Fun is what we experience during an act.Happiness is what we experience after an act.It is a deep, long-lasting emotion.
Going to an amusement park or a ball game, watching a movie or television are fun activities that help us relax, temporarily fet our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.
I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. They have constant aess to exciting parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything that spells "happiness". But in memoir(回忆录)after memoir, they expose the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, broken marriages and loneliness.
Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest, he will tell you that he is afraid of making a mitment. For mitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement.Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.
Similarly, couples that choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun over painful happiness. They can dine out whenever they want and sleep as late as they want.Couples with babies are lucky to get a whole night' s sleep.I don't know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children.
Understanding and aepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations we can ever e to.It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can truly increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it frees us from envy: we now understand that all those rich and famous people we were so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.
67.If one gets the real meaning of happiness, he ____.
A.will start a business B.won' t place too much value on money
C.will seek for freedom D.won't devote himself to his family
68.The author probably agrees that ____.
A.fun creates long - lasting satisfaction
B.fun is short-lived while happiness is long-lasting
C.fun provides enjoyment while pain leads to happiness
D.long - standing fun may lead to happiness
69.What does the author think of marriage?
A.It ends in pain. B.It leads to raising children.
C.It affords greater fun. D.It means mitment.
70.What is the passage mainly about?
A. Marriage and mitment. B.Suess and satisfaction.
C. Fun and happiness. D.Entertainment and responsibility.

What is language for? Some people seem to think it's for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of words―the longer the lists, the better. That's wrong. Language is for the exchange of ideas and information. It's meaningless knowing all about a language if you can't use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can't speak correctly or fluently. They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Saw once wrote, "Foreigners often speak English too correctly.” But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They're English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong bees right. People not only make history, they make language. But a people can only make its own language. It can't make another people's language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn't overdo(做过头)it. They should put munication first.
66. Language is used to ________.
  A. express oneselfB. practice grammar rules
  C. talk with foreigners onlyD. learn lists of words
67. The underlined word in the passage “exchange” means .

What exactly is a lie ?Is it anything we say which we know is untrue ?Or is it something more than that ?For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say “I wish I could help you, but I am short of money myself.” In fact , you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie ?
Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of southern California has made a scientific study of lying. Aording to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a “white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it’s terrible. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise that they have no intention of carrying out. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at :the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.
Research has been done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now”. They also tend to touch certain parts of the face, particularly the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to changes and the increased pressure makes it itch.
Another gesture that gives liars away is what the writer Decmond Morris in his book Man Watching calls the “mouth cover”. He says that there are several typical forms of this ,such as covering part of the mouth with the fingers, touching the upper lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side off the mouth. Such a gesture can be understood as an unconscious(未察觉的) attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself from lying.
Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth , moving about in a chair can not be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to happen more often in this situation. It is one gesture alone that gives the liar away but a whole number of things , and in particular the context(上下文) which the lie is told.
66.Aording to the passage, a white lie seems to be a lie ______.
A. that other people believe
B. that other people don’t believe

D. told in order to take advantage of someone

A. are better at telling less serious lies than men
B. generally lie for more than men do
C. often make promises they intend to break
D. lie at parties more often than men do

A. his blood pressure increases measurably
B. he looks very serious
C. he is likely to make some small changes in his behavior
D. he uses his unconscious mind
69.The writer of the passage______.
A. hates lying B. enjoys lying C. often tells a lie D. tries to study about lying
70. Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage as a sign of lying ?
A. Touching one’s ears B. Rubbing the nose

I picked up my two best friends and we were off on a road trip. I had just returned to America from a year abroad in China. So, naturally I wanted to take a trip: to Canada.
Montreal, the second largest city in Canada, is a four-hour drive from my home in New Hampshire.
We felt a thrill as we crossed the border into Canada. It was the first time I had ever driven across an international border. We turned on the radio to try and find some Canadian stations.
After dropping off our bags at our hotel, we were immediately walking down the famous St. Catherine’s street. While we walked two things surprised us: how cold it was and how well everyone dressed. The streets of Montreal are like a fashion show. Both men and women look like they stepped out of the pages of a magazine.
All of that fashion has to keep them warm since Montreal is so cold. Last year it broke the record for most snowfall in North America. To hide from the cold we went into a small diner because we wanted to order Poutine, a very popular snack in Montreal. It is French fries covered in cheese and brown gravy (肉汁). It is delicious.
However. we had a hard time ordering the dish since the official language of Montreal is French. It is actually the fifth largest French-speaking city in the world. But since the rest of Canada speaks English, plenty of people were there to help.
We spent the rest of the weekend going to the many historical churches and monuments in Montreal. But at night we’d head to the very modern dance clubs and bars. Montreal is a city that sits between the past and the future and the traveler can choose whichever direction he wants to go.

In high school, all Canadian students take part in a very exciting event. It is “Take Your Children to Work Day”. Students will have a chance to work with their parents. My day took place in my mom’s work, the York Region Police Department.
When I arrived, a coach was teaching the officers basic bat (格斗) skills. Everyone tried their best to practice. I could see them sweating (流汗) and panting (喘气).
The most exciting part of my visit was a stop at the 911 munication Center. 911 is the same as 110, 119 and 120 in China. Every 911 Call in the city is answered here. When I entered the center, I stood beside a call dispatcher (分派人员) and watched him dealing with the calls.
Suddenly, the phone rang, he picked it up and a woman cried for help. There was a robbery (抢劫) in her house. The call dispatcher told her: “Please calm down and move to the safe place quietly. Don’t fight with them. Just let them take what they want. Please make sure you are not hurt. We are sending officers there.”
He followed the call and found the address. The call dispatcher chose the five closest police cars from the satellite map and clicked (敲键盘) to send the policemen. I saw the police cars from the satellite map were quickly moving to the woman’s house. Five minutes later, they arrived. I asked the call dispatcher why he sent five cars. He said: “There are different levels of emergencies. Robbery is a high priority (优先), so we have to send five cars.”
The day was interesting. I learned how the different departments work together. The officers were very friendly and admirable (让人崇敬的).

When I looked at the grade on my math paper my jaw (下巴) almost dropped to the ground: a big “65” in bright red ink. I had never received such a terrible grade before.
I was so ashamed that when I got home that afternoon I lied to my dad. I told him I got 85 and that the report wouldn’t e until the end of the month. Dad smiled. His daughter would never lie about her grade, so he didn’t doubt the unusual delay (延迟) of my report.
A month later. Dad casually (随意地) asked me again about the report at the dinner table. He looked right into my eyes and asked for an answer. Having no choice. I told him that I had in fact got just 65 in my math final. I had lied because I didn’t want to let him down.
For a moment, he just looked at me. I would have preferred a telling off(斥责) than that silence. Finally, Dad said, in a hurt voice, “You have already let me down, with your lie. I am not disappointed at your math score. That is no big deal-no one can be perfect all the time. But I am very disappointed in you. If you can’t be honest with your dad. who can you be honest with? It’s much easier to achieve a better grade than rebuild someone else’s trust in you.”
Dad’s words touched my heart. I couldn’t five (原谅) myself for having hurt his feelings. I took out the report that I had been hiding for weeks, handed to him and apologized, sincerely. I realized that my honesty is not only important to me personally, but to those around me that truly care about my well-being(幸福).

A Week ago, “Sports for Life” programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then. our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones:
Sports 1: Basketball
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus. each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
Sports 2: Gym
We will be using St. Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First. it is not very busy .and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has a lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping, jogging, outdoor aerobics (有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.
Sports 3: Hiking.
Hiking (远足)will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will aompany the students, and a hiking instructor will aompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $ 75/hr.
Sports 4: Swimming
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i.e. 2:45pm to 3:45pm). Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.

AFTER a year of saving we had enough money for a fish tank, fish and their expensive breathing apparatus (设备). My children and I spent hours at the pet store, picking out colored rocks, plants and six perfect fish.
Back home, I set the fish loose in the newly cleaned and filled tank. We all spent the evening watching in wonder as they explored their new home. The kids were happy; I was thrilled.
The next morning my husband, who had got up to make coffee, rushed back into the bedroom and shook me awake. He told me that the water had gone from the tank.
I sprang out of bed and ran down the hall to the living room. I gasped (喘气) when I saw my beautiful waterless tank and the lifeless bodies of my fish lying on the rocks. The kids were gathered around the tank, crying and pointing fingers at each other.
I felt the carpet and discovered it was dry. How could 30 gallons (加仑) of water disappear and leave the carpet dry? I anxiously searched for the reason the water had escaped and where it had escaped to. but came up with nothing. I called all the pet stores. searching for an answer. Maybe the cats had drunk all the water. Maybe the water had evaporated (蒸发).
It beat me; it beat everybody. I gave up and went out to the backyard to have a private pity party and stepped right into a pool of water. It didn’t take long to discover the source. When I’d unhooked (取下) the airline (通风管路) the night before, I’d thrown one end of the tube over the back of the tank. It had dearly fed the water out of the tank and into the yard.
Just at that moment I heard a scream of amazement from inside the house. It was my daughter: “Mommy, Mommy! They’re alive! The fish are alive! it’s a miracle!”
I ran back to find them refilling the tank. We all watched in amazement as each fish began to wriggle (扭动) and shake and spring back to life. By the time the tank was half full, all six of the fish were swimming happily around. They were indeed miracle fish!

A. hurt B. defeated C. was too difficult for D. was unexpected
60. What can we infer from the article?
A. The fish were magical. B. They’d bought a broken tank.

Teens' lives hit by economy
Some teenagers are crossing their dream colleges off their lists. Others are thinking of skipping(略过)their senior trips or reducing prom(毕业舞会)costs. Many are finding their work hours cut while their expenses rise.
So,who exactly is punishing them?Is it their parents,teachers or employers?No,it's the economy(经济状况)
If you are like most teenagers, you probably don't understand what “recession”,“negative economic growth” and “subprime mortgage crisis (次贷危机)”actually mean. And you probably don't spend your days watching the ups and downs of the stock market.
It's safe to say that most teens don't know much about the economy except for one thing:it's bad. But just how exactly is the economy affecting teens?

The economy cuts into other areas of teenagers' lives, too.
Joey Camarda,a student at Modesto High School in California, who works at an ice cream store, said,“Probably due to the economy,I have been getting less hours at my job,and because of that,I am not getting enough money to help pay for college.”
Tara Mooney,a senior at Beyer High School, has also begun to notice that money is tight.
