在我国众多的考试中，英语考试无疑是最大、最热也是最受争议的一个门类。其中，国外引进的考种不说，单论我国自产的英语考种可分为三大类。1.学业阶段性考种：小学、初中、高中、大学、硕士、博士等各个学段的过程性考试。2.学业终结性考种：中考、高考、考研、考博（严格的说法应该是研考、博考，这里沿俗）等大规模常模参照性考试。3.社会认证性考种：四、六级英语，专四、专八英语、职称英语、行业英语等水平性过关考
试。至于社会上各种竞赛性英语考种，其形式、品级虽然繁多，但俱未形成气候，社会公信力及官方与民间认可程度都不高，尚不足以成为一个大类。
英语考种固然很多，而由各考种繁衍出来的英语卷种更是多得不可胜数，这既是我国改革开放后的一大社会活动的奇观，同时也自在地成为了一大利润丰厚的产业。其他英语考种不论，单就此中一个重要的语言类考种的高考英语在高考实行分省命题之后，现在已经达到了年产近20套卷种的规模。而考试区划更细、试卷结构更杂、命题管理更乱的中考英语每年所产生的卷种复又数倍于高考英语。只此
