Imagine landing in a foreign country where you cannot speak the language, understand the culture and don’t know anybody. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a friend who could help you out?
John Smith, an English explorer who landed in America in 1607, found the best friend ever. She was a Native American named Pocahontas (1595-1617). And she did more than teach Smith the language: she saved his life, twice.
Smith was captured by members of Pocahontas’s tribe (部落) and was going to be killed. But for some reason, the Chief’s daughter, Pocahontas, felt sorry for Smith (who was probably the first white man she had ever seen) and threw her body over his to protect him. Smith returned safely to the small village he was living in.
During the winter the English settlers did not know how to get food from nature. Pocahontas often brought food for Smith and his friends.
A year later Pocahontas’s father tried to kill Smith again because the Native Americans were very scared the English would try to take over their land. Pocahontas warned him and he was able to escape.Later she became a Christian and eventually married an Englishman named John Rolfe. She spent the last year of her life in London.

When my first wartime Christmas came, I was in basic training in New Jersey and not sure if I would make it home for the holiday. Only on the afternoon of December 23 was the list of men who would have the three-day holiday posted. I was one of the lucky soldiers. It was Christmas Eve when I arrived home, and a little snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door. I could see beyond her, into the corner of the living room where the tree had always stood. There were lights, colors, and ornaments (饰品) shining against the green of a pine.
"Where did it e from?" I asked.
"I asked the Gates boy to cut it," my mother said. "I wouldn't have had one just for myself, but when in great need... such a rush! He just brought it in this afternoon."
The pine reached to the proper height, almost to the ceiling, and the Tree Top Crystal(水晶)Star was in its place. A few green branches reached out a little awkwardly(难看)at the side, I thought, and there was a bit of bare trunk showing in the middle. But the tree filled the room with warm light and the whole house with the pleasant smell of Christmas.
"It's not like the one you used to find," my mother went on. "Yours were always in good shape. I suppose the Gates boy didn't know where to look for a better one. But I couldn't be fussy(挑剔的)."

Hydroponics(水培) is the only way that in the future we will be able to grow crops and food and at the same time sustain (维持) the earth. It is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, without soil.
These days we are losing land at such a rapid rate that it is only a matter of time before we will run out of land to develop. If we continue to grow at such a rate, eventually the only land left to be developed will be farmland. If we use farmland to put up more apartments, then we will have no land to grow crops to survive. This is being a serious possibility. This is why scientists have developed another way to grow food and plants without using land.
The great thing about hydroponics growing is that anyone can do it. If you have the knowledge and the right equipment, you can do it yourself at your home. This means that individuals that live in downtown areas, and have no yard space for a garden can grow vegetables and fruits and herbs (药草) which will free them from going to the grocery store every day.
The equipment to grow plants using a hydroponics system is easy to obtain and can be easily picked up at a local store or over the Inter. They are reasonably priced and easy to use. All you have to do is to follow the insturcitons. You will soon be on your way to free groceries.
With a hydroponics system, your plants will all grow faster. This is especially good if you grow and sell them. You can expect a higher yield (出产) and they grow quickly. You can save a lot of money by using them for cooking all year round. You can also expect to have a fresh supply of high quality vegetables and green leaves on a regular basis.
41.Which of the following statements is TRUE about the future hydroponics system aording to the passage?
A.Only people living in the countryside can make use of this system.
B.You will spend a lot of money and time on using this kind of system.
C.The equipment of this system can be bought from an online shop or your local shop.
D.People will not get enough food by using it ,so they will still need land to grow crops.
42.If you use a hydroponics system at your house, .
A.the plants will grow much slower than on farmland
B.you can only harvest enough plants for your kitchen use
C.you will need some other people to help you maintain it
D.you will no longer have to go to the grocery store every day
43.The underlined word “pick up” in Paragraph 4 means “_______”.
A.buy B.learn C.recover D.search
44.What would be the best title for this passage?
