My friend Gayle has been “living” with cancer for four years and it is progressively(日益地) getting worse. As a child she never received one because she believed that if you told your birthday wish it wouldn’t e true.
I was at an ice cream stand one day and in the window was a miniature red Radio Flyer wagon that could be won in a weekly drawing. The posing career (作曲生涯) of Albert Roussel got off to a changeable start, and received one of its biggest suesses from a lie.
Roussel became an orphan (孤儿) at the age of eight and went to live with his grandfather. He built on the music he had learned from his mother, entertaining himself by reading through the family music collection and playing operatic selections and popular songs on the piano. Three years later Roussel’s grandfather died, and his mother's sister took him in. Her husband arranged for young Albert to take piano lessons. Summer vacations at a Belgian seaside added a second love to his life ― the sea. He studied to be a soldier in the navy, but still made time to study music.
In the French Navy, he and two friends found time to play the music of Beethoven and other posers. Roussel also began posing. At the Church of the Trinity in Cherbourg on Christmas Day 1892, he had his first public appearance as a poser. That suess encouraged Roussel to write a wedding march, and one of his fellow naval officers offered to show it to a famous conductor, Edouard Colonne. When Roussel’s friend returned with the manuscript (手稿), he reported that Colonne had advised Roussel to give up his naval career and devote his life to music.
Not long afterward, at the age of 25, Roussel did just that. He applied the qualities that he had developed in the navy to his posing and became a major force in twentieth century French music. As for Edouard Colonne’s inspiring advice that Roussel should devote his life to music, Roussel's naval friend later admitted that he had made it up and that he had never even shown Roussel’s manuscript to the conductor.

Picture the scene: the battery on your mobile phone has run out. You can’t make any calls for help and no one can contact you. You are all alone---well, not quite. Just reach into your pocket and take out a piece of sugar. Put it into the battery, wait a minute and you’re back on the phone.
Thanks to a couple of American scientists, this situation could bee real. Swadesh Chaudhuri and Derek Lovley have invented the “bacteria battery”---powered by bacteria that eat sugar and turn it into electricity. “This is a special anism,” Lovley said. “You can harvest enough electricity to power a cell phone battery for about four days from a spoonful of sugar.”
In the past, bacteria batteries have been expensive and not long-lasting. But this battery uses more efficient bacteria that can turn 80 percent of sugar into electricity energy. This is 30 percent more than similar batteries can manage.
The bacteria battery could bee as small as a household battery. It’s also cheap and stable, as sugar can be taken from waste and crops. But the sugar to electricity process is slow: it could take weeks for the bacteria to digest a cup of sugar. And it produces “greenhouse” gases which pollute the environment.
The scientists understand there is a lot more work to be done. “It is still young,” said Lovley. “Where we are now is where solar power was 20 or 30 years ago.”
But he believes the battery could be used in scientific equipment at the bottom of the ocean. Other ideas include using sugar in the blood to run medical devices in the human body, and taking sugar from animal waste to provide energy to power homes in rural(乡村的) areas.
68. Which of the following is NOT the strong point of the newly-developed battery?
A. Convenient.B. Stable.C. Inexpensive.D. Quick.
69. The underlined sentence in the fifth paragraph actually means________.
A. the bacteria battery shares some similarities with solar energy.
B. scientists will continue their work until they find solar energy.
C. there is much room for the improvement of the bacteria battery.
D. the bacteria battery will get popular in 20 or 30 years.
70. Aording to the passage, who will find the bacteria battery less useful?
A. Farmers.B. Divers. C. Doctors.D. Electricians.
71. This passage is mainly about________.
A. how to change sugar into electricity.

C. a new way to reduce pollution caused by mobile phones.

There has been much discussion recently about reducing the weight of English in China's high-stake tests such as the national college entrance examination. It is argued by some people who are in favor of the change to reduce the importance of English in tests so that it will lead students to focus more on learning Chinese. Maybe that’s because the TV program Writing in Chinese has exposed the problem that students and the general public cannot write in Chinese as they used to do.
Some blame the design of the curriculum (课程) for giving English an equal emphasis, which might have contributed to the failure in teaching Chinese. But this is probably not a fair charge because children in English speaking countries cannot spell either.
In fact, high achievers in English or another foreign language are more likely to be high achievers in Chinese. It has been proved many times in recent Chinese history that those capable of using a foreign language are also masters in their mother tongue. Qian Zhongshu, Lu Xun and Lin Yutang are just a few examples.
Another trend of thought for curriculum reform(课程改革)is related to the viewpoint of “worth”. It is true that English is one of the subjects that students do spend too much time on, with pitiful results. This makes some doubt if it is worth giving it priority. But this is not a reasonable argument either, as students still need to study things that matter more to their future job prospects(前景).
From my perspective, improvements in Chinese language education should not be achieved by sacrificing(牺牲) another important subject. There should be a healthy foreign language education program. Attacking English education as a waste of time or using it as a goat(替罪羊) for failures in Chinese education are both harmful trends.
To be constructive, we ought to start a dialogue on ways to make improvements in learning outes so that students’ time learning English is spent more effectively. There are a few things that could improve English education, such as assessment design, learner motivation and teaching style. I am sure there are many other areas where changes can greatly improve the effectiveness and efficiency of English learning, which may benefit the teaching of other subjects as well, Chinese included.
72. In paragraph 3 Qian Zhongshu, Lu Xun and Lin Yutang are mentioned to _____.
A. show respect for their capabilities of learning languages.
B. prove English and Chinese are not contrary.
C. prove the importance of learning English in China.
D. tell the readers English Education is to blame.
73. Aording to the passage, which of the following statements is RIGHT?
A. The TV program Writing in Chinese is very popular at present.
B. Good results of learning English are not worth so much time.
C. Some are in favor of attaching less importance to English in exams.
D. Sacrificing English can improve Chinese language education.
74. In the writer’s opinion, what should be done to solve the argument?
A. Increasing time spent in learning Chinese.
B. Increasing time spent in learning English.
C. Reducing the weight of English in examinations.
D. Improving the learning outes effectively.
75. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?
A. English education is still important in China.
B. Chinese education is more important in China.
C. English contributes to the failure in teaching Chinese.
D. Ways to make improvements in learning Chinese.

写作一 One possible version:
Everyone has a desire for suess while suess only belongs to the hard-working people. As the old saying goes, “no pains, no gains.”
I failed in the last exam. So discouraged was I that I didn’t want to do anything. I didn’t do exercises and even didn’t attend to what the teacher said in the classes. Later on, I found things got worse. Only then did I realize I was wrong and that suess will not wait for me. So I made the best of every minute to catch up with my classmates. Now I’m progressing in my studies. I feel confident that my effort will pay off eventually.
My story makes me believe failure is temporary for a diligent person but permanent for the lazy. One’s effort will surely be rewarded with suess, no matter how big or small the suess is.
写作二 One possible version:
As senior students, we are often under pressure. With too much study pressure, many of us don’t pay any attention to our physical and mental health. What results in it?
Firstly, many students haven’t developed health eating habits. It’s mon for them to have no breakfast or eat too much snacks. Besides, buried in their lessons, they are lacking in necessary exercise. What’s the worst is that some students don’t like talking with others face to face, which leads to their lack of munication. As a result, they are in so poor condition that they can’t concentrate on their study, thus making it ineffective.
It’s well known that health is of great importance. From my point of view, we’d better take some exercise, visit some friends and have a balanced diet. Only when we are healthy can we study and enjoy our life better.
