Many of us use a lift several times during the day without really thinking about it. But Lee Gray, PhD, of the University of North Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this unnoticed form of public transport. He is known as the “Elevator Guy”.
“The lift bees this interesting social space where behaviors are sort of odd (奇怪的),” Gray told the BBC. “They (elevators) are socially very interesting but often very awkward places.”
We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else es in, we may have to move. And here, aording to Gray, lift-users unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements. He told the BBC what he had observed.
He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want ? it’s your own little box.
If there are two of you, you go into different corners, standing diagonally (对角线地) across from each other to create distance.
When a third person enters, you will unconsciously form a triangle. And when there is a fourth person it bees a square, with someone in every corner. A fifth person is probably going to have to stand in the middle.
Newers to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and then act decisively. Once in, for most people the rule is simple ? look down, or look at your phone.
Why are we so awkward in lifts?
“You don’t have enough space,” Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical psychologist at the Free University of Berlin, told the BBC. “Usually when we meet other people we have about an arm’s length of distance between us. And that’s not possible in most elevators.”
In such a small, enclosed space it bees very important to act in a way that cannot be understood as threatening or odd. “The easiest way to do this is to avoid eye contact,” she said.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Brazil is the the most suessful football nation of all time, with five World Cups won. But this nation has something else to be proud of.
Brazil has bee one of the developing world’s great suesses at reducing population growth―but more by chance than design. While countries such as India have made joint efforts to reduce birth rates, Brazil has had better result without really trying, says Gee Martine at Harvard.
Brazil’s population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951 and 1960 to 1.93% a year between 1981 and 1990, and Brazilian women now have only 2.7 children on average. Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990, an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.
Martine puts it down to, among other things, soap operas and installment (分期付款) plans introduced in the 1970s. Both played an important, although indirect, role in lowering the birth rate. Brazil is one of the world’s biggest producers of soap operas. Globo, Brazil’s most popular television work, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.
"Although they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of reproduction, they describe middle and upper class values―not many children, different attitudes towards sex, women working," says Martine. "They sent this image to all parts of Brazil and made people conscious of other patterns of behaviour and other values, which were put into a very attractive package."
Meanwhile, the installment plans tried to encourage the poor to bee consumers. "This led to an enormous change in consumption patterns and consumption was inpatible (不相容的) with unlimited reproduction." says Martine.
66. Aording to the passage, Brazil has cut back its population growth_______.
A. by educating its citizens B. by careful family planning
C. by aident D. by developing TV programs
67. Aording to the passage, many Third World countries_______.
A. haven’t yet found an effective measure to control their population
B. would soon join Brazil in controlling their birth rate
C. haven’t attached much importance to birth control
D. neglected the role of TV plays in family planning
68.The phrase "puts it down to" (Line 1, Para. 3) is closest in meaning to "_______"
A. contributes to B. owes it to C. finds it a reason for D. pares it to
69.Soap operas have helped in lowering Brazil’s birth rate because_______.
A. they keep people sitting long hours watching TV B. they popularize birth control measures
C. people are drawn to their attractive package D. they have gradually changed people’s way of life
70.What is Martine’s conclusion about Brazil’s population growth?
A. The increase in birth rate will promote consumption.
B. Consumption patterns and reproduction patterns are contradictory.(相互矛盾的)
C. The desire for consumption helps to reduce birth rate.
D. A country’s production is limited by its population growth.

By giving workers rapid transportation, the automobile has freed them from having to live near their place of work. Mothers of victims of such aidents have formed an anization called MADD (Mother Against Drunk Driving). These women want to prevent further tragedies. They have worked to encourage the government to limit the youngest driving age. Students have formed a similar anization. SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) are spreading the same message among their friends.

The phenomenon of waste can often be seen in our daily life. As is shown in the picture, when students have dinner in the school canteen, they throw so much left-over food into the waste collector, which upsets the teachers and workers.
This scene reminds me of similar problems around us. It is not unmon to see things go to waste in schools. Some students do not turn off the lights when they leave the classroom, others leave the water running after using it, and still others throw away their pens, tapes or even notebooks just because they don’t like them. Such behavior will only contribute to students forming bad habits.
To avoid wasting food at school, we should first of all realize the significance of saving and be aware of our own misdoings. Then, we need to take action and be careful with the things we eat or use in our daily life. Also,we should persuade others not to waste things.
