interesting?Alotofour--alothaschangedsincethen,buttheprinciplethatinspiredBenjaminFranklinisstilltruetoday,allthroughoutthemunitiesinAmerica.

Thoseofyouwhoareheretodayunderstandthelesson,howyoucangainbygiving.Youcan

understandhowvolunteeringcantransformthesouls,bothwhogiveandthosetheyhelp.Whenyouteachachildtoread,forexample,younotonlyimprovetheirchancesforsuessintheworld,butyoubeeinvestedintheprogressofayounglife.Whenyouvisittheelderly,youremindthemthattheyareloved,andyouremindyourselfofhowdeeplyweallfeeltheneedfor

passion.Whenyouhelpthehomelessfindshelter,youremovethepainofneed,andrediscovertheresiliencyofthehumanspirit.

Whiletherearemanywaysthatgovernmentcanhelpsociety'sleastadvantaged--andwetrytodoourbesthereinWashington--itcanneverreplicatetheprivateactsofgoodnessandthetiesofaffectiontheycreatebetweenAmericans.Andthatiswhyouradministrationhasfocusedon

为他人开一朵花

如果有了花，清寒的春风将变得温柔；如果有了花，寂静的夜将变得绚烂；如果有了花，孤单的大地将变得缠绵。那么，我们为什么不为他人的生命开一朵花呢？

每个志愿者都是一朵花，他们盛开在学校，在街道，在公园，在敬老院，在每个需要帮助的地方。微笑是她们娇艳的容颜，真诚是他们瑰丽的色彩，奉献是他们摇曳的身姿，爱心是他们迷人的芬芳，他们盛开在每个需要帮助的人心里。

从罗马时代的博爱精神到基督教的宗教责任及救赎观念再到现代社会的志愿者精神，爱与奉献薪火相传，成为人类社会的精神力量；从一九九三年底中国青年志愿者第一次行动到一九九四年十二月五日中国青年志愿者协会成立再到现在遍布全国的青年志愿者组织，越来越多的人怀抱服务，团结的理想和共同使这个世界变得更加美好的信念，加入了志愿者的队伍。

犹记得二零零八年汶川大地震的惨烈与无情，感叹生命的渺小与脆弱。但有这样一群人，他们在第一时间从全国各地奔赴灾区，投入抢险队伍中，不分昼夜地忙碌在灾区各处，他们关切的眼神，亲切的话语，无微不至的关心像一泓清流，滋润着灾区人民焦虑
