七岁那一年，家里为她请了一位家庭教师，也就是影响海伦一生的苏利文老师。苏利文在小时候眼睛也差点失明，了解失去光明的痛苦。在她辛苦的指导下，海伦用手触摸学会手语，摸点字卡学会了读书，后来用手摸别人的嘴唇，终於学会说话了。

苏利文老师为了让海伦接近大自然，让她在草地上打滚，在田野跑跑跳跳，在地里埋下种子，爬到树上吃饭;还带她去摸一摸刚出生的小猪，也到河边去玩水。海伦在老师爱的关怀下，竟然克服失明与失聪的障碍，完成了大学学业。

一九三六年，和她朝夕相处五十年的老师离开人间，海伦非常的伤心。海伦知道，如果没有老师的爱，就没有今天的她，决心要把老师给她的爱发扬光大。於是，海伦跑遍美国大大小小的城市，周游世界，为残障的人到处奔走，全心全力为那些不幸的人服务。

清晨，太阳还没升上山头，海伦就醒来了，她轻手轻脚地坐到书桌前，翻开一本厚厚的盲文书。她津津有味地摸起来，一页又一页。那一个个凹凸不平的盲文，刮破了海伦的手指，一阵钻心的疼痛袭来，海伦像触电似的抽搐了一下，但她没有停下来，而是把伤口放在嘴里含了含，又忍痛继续摸起来。

中午，太阳升到当空了，是吃中午饭的时间了。妈妈早已做好了一桌好菜，等待海伦来享用，可就是不见小海伦的身影，原来，她还沉浸在那无边无际的知识海洋里，不自拔呢!妈妈拉了拉海伦的手，示意她吃午饭了，读得正高兴的海伦怎么舍得放下那有趣的书呢!她摇了摇头，继续用手指阅读着盲文。饭菜热了又热，海伦才一边读一边吃。

到了夜晚，家人们都睡熟了，连家中看门的狗狗都卧在自己的窝中，打起盹来。海伦还在如饥似渴地阅读着。夜深，气温降低，海伦一连打了几个喷嚏，过了一会儿，一阵又一阵的倦意向她袭来，她急忙摇摇头，让自己清醒过来，可过了几分钟，又困了，她咬了一下自己的舌头，剧痛终于使她清醒，她又打起十二分精神，继续遨游在知识的海洋中。一本盲文书被海伦读完了，可一阵钻心的疼痛让她不禁叫了起来，原来，手上的伤加重了。她不想吵醒爸爸妈妈，又拿起另一本书，她实在太困了，趴在桌上，睡着了。
