Somepeopleareoftheopinionthattheenvironmentalproblemisthepricewehavetopayforeconomicdevelopment.ButIdonotthinkthatthisargumentisvalid.Afterall,whatisthepointofeconomicgrowthifpeople'slivesareadverselyalfectedbyworseningenvironmentalpollution?

Thereisplentyofevidencetoshowthatsustainabledevelopmentcanbeachievedbybalancingeconomicgrowthwithprotectionoftheenvironment.Thekeytoachievingthisistomakepeopleawareoftheseriousnessoftheproblem.Bothgovernmentsandordinarycitizensshouldjoinhandstomakethisworldabetterplacetolivein,notonlyforourselves,butalsoforfuturegenerations.

Somepeoplebelievethateconomicdevelopmentshouldneverbeatthecostoftheenvironment.Theythinkthepresentseriousenvironmentalproblemsarelargelycausedbyrapid?economicdevelopment.Forexample,landresourcesareshrinkingbecauseoftheindustrialdevelopmentandtheexpansionofcities.Desertsarespreadingbecauseofovergrazing,poorfanning,treecutting,andstripmining.Ourairandwatersuppliesarebeingpollutedbypoisonousgassesandwasteproducts.Itisimportant,therefore,thatweshouldtakeanotherlookatthewayinwhichourindustriesandcitiesaredeveloping.

However,otherpeoplethinkitunnecessarytoconsiderenvironmentalproblemsnowandourfirstpriorityshouldalwaysbegiventoeconomicdevelopment.Theybelievethatenvironmentalproblemsareinevitableandunavoidableintheprocessofeconomicdevelopment.Theyareonlythebyproductsofeconomicdevelopment,whichcanbedealtwithlaterwhenwehavethetimeandmoney.

Ithinkthesecondideaispletelywrong.Ourultimateaimineconomicdevelopmentistoprovideafortableandhappylifeforourpeople.Whatisthepointofeconomicdevelopmentifweachieveitatthecostofourenvironment?Therehasbeenmuchevidencetoprovethatabalancebetweenthetwohelpsmorerapidandcontinuousdevelopment.

Economicdevelopmentisseeminglymoreimportant,duetothefactthatitcreatesenormousjobopportunities,improveslivingconditionsandincreasesgovernmentrevenues.Yet,theabovegoalscanonlyreallybereachedonconditionthattheenvironmentiswellprotected.And,interesting,itistheeconomicdevelopmentpersethatprovidesthemoneyandpersonnelresourcesrequiredfortheprotectionoftheenvironment.Awell-preservedenvironmentisthegroundworkfortheeconomyandinawaypromoteseconomicgrowth.Afast-developmentandwell-functioningeconomycallsforagoodenvironment,whichoffersessentialresources,e.g.wood,coal,water,andsoon.Oncetheenvironmentdeteriorates,theproductionprocessislikelytobedisturbedorevenhalted.Whatisworse,naturaldisasterthateswiththeworseningenvironmentalconditionsmightevenparalyzethewholeeconomyandposeaseverethreattohumanlife.Thepursuitofshort-termeconomicprofitisthedestructionofourhomeandthatofourposterity.

Soeconomicdevelopmentandenvironmentalprotectionareequallyimportant.Inthiscase,weareactuallyworkingonanenvironment-friendlyeconomy.
