Therearehundredsofhumanrightsactivistsandsocialworkerswhoarenotonlyspeakingfortheirrights,butwhoarestrugglingtoachievetheirgoalofpeace,educationandequality.Thousandsofpeoplehavebeenkilledbytheterroristsandmillionshavebeeninjured.Iamjustoneofthem.SohereIstand.SohereIstand,onegirl,amongmany.Ispeaknotformyself,butsothosewithoutavoicecanbeheard.Thosewhohavefoughtfortheirrights.Theirrighttoliveinpeace.Theirrighttobetreatedwithdignity.Theirrighttoequalityofopportunity.Theirrighttobeeducated.

Dearfriends,on9October20xx,theTalibanshotmeontheleftsideofmyforehead.Theyshotmyfriends,too.Theythoughtthatthebulletswouldsilenceus,buttheyfailed.Andoutofthatsilencecamethousandsofvoices.Theterroriststhoughttheywouldchangemyaimsandstopmyambitions.Butnothingchangedinmylifeexceptthis:weakness,fearandhopelessnessdied.Strength,powerandcouragewasborn.

IamthesameMalala.Myambitionsarethesame.Myhopesarethesame.Andmydreamsarethesame.Dearsistersandbrothers,Iamnotagainstanyone.NeitheramIheretospeakintermsofpersonalrevengeagainsttheTalibanoranyotherterroristgroup.Iamheretospeakfortherightofeducationforeverychild.IwanteducationforthesonsanddaughtersoftheTalibanandalltheterroristsandextremists.IdonotevenhatetheTalibwhoshotme.Eveniftherewasaguninmyhandandhewasstandinginfrontofme,Iwouldnotshoothim.ThisisthepassionIhavelearnedfromMohammed,theprophetofmercy,JesusChristandLordBuddha.ThisthelegacyofchangeIhaveinheritedfromMartinLutherKing,NelsonMandelaandMohammedAliJinnah.

ThisisthephilosophyofnonviolencethatIhavelearnedfromGandhi,BachaKhanandMotherTeresa.AndthisisthefivenessthatIhavelearnedfrommyfatherandfrommymother.Thisiswhatmysoulistellingme:bepeacefulandloveeveryone.

Dearsistersandbrothers,werealizetheimportanceoflightwhenweseedarkness.Werealizetheimportanceofourvoicewhenwearesilenced.Inthesameway,whenwewereinSwat,thenorthofPakistan,werealizedtheimportanceofpensandbookswhenwesawtheguns.Thewisesaying,"Thepenismightierthanthesword."Itistrue.Theextremistsareafraidofbooksandpens.Thepowerofeducationfrightensthem.Theyareafraidofwomen.Thepowerofthevoiceofwomenfrightensthem.Thisiswhytheykilled14innocentstudentsintherecentattackinQuetta.Andthatiswhytheykillfemaleteachers.Thatiswhytheyareblastingschoolseverydaybecausetheywereandtheyareafraidofchangeandequalitythatwewillbringtooursociety.AndIrememberthattherewasaboyinourschoolwhowasaskedbyajournalistwhyaretheTalibanagainsteducation?Heansweredverysimplybypointingtohisbook,hesaid,"aTalibdoesn'tknowwhatiswritteninsidethisbook."

TheythinkthatGodisatiny,littleconservativebeingwhowouldpointgunsatpeople'sheadsjustfoingtoschool.TheseterroristsaremisusingthenameofIslamfortheirownpersonalbenefit.Pakistanisapeaceloving,democratiountry.Pashtunswanteducationfortheirdaughtersandsons.Islamisareligionofpeace,humanityandbrotherhood.Itisthedutyandresponsibilitytogeteducationforeachchild,thatiswhatitsays.Peaceisanecessityforeducation.Inmanypartsoftheworld,especiallyPakistanandAfghanistan,terrorism,warandconflictsstopchildrenfromgoingtoschools.Wearereallytiredofthesewars.Womenandchildrenaresufferinginmanywaysinmanypartsoftheworld.

InIndia,innocentandpoorchildrenarevictimsofchildlabor.ManyschoolshavebeendestroyedinNigeria.PeopleinAfghanistanhavebeenaffectedbyextremism.Younggirlshavetododomestihildlaborandareforcedtogetmarriedatanearlyage.Poverty,ignorance,injustice,racismandthedeprivationofbasicrightsarethemainproblems,facedbybothmenandwomen.

TodayIamfocusingonwomen'srightsandgirls'educationbecausetheyaresufferingthemost.Therewasatimewhenwomenactivistsaskedmentostandupfortheirrights.Butthistimewewilldoitbyourselves.Iamnottellingmentostepawayfromspeakingforwomen'srights,butIamfocusingonwomentobeindependentandfightforthemselves.Sodearsistersandbrothers,nowit'stimetospeakup.Sotoday,wecallupontheworldleaderstochangetheirstrategicpoliciesinfavorofpeaceandprosperity.Wecallupontheworldleadersthatallofthesedealsmustprotectwomenandchildren'srights.Adealthatgoesagainsttherightsofwomenisunaeptable.

Wecalluponallgovernmentstoensurefree,pulsoryeducationallovertheworldforeverychild.Wecalluponallthegovernmentstofightagainstterrorismandviolence.Toprotectchildrenfrombrutalityandharm.Wecalluponthedevelopednationstosupporttheexpansionofeducationopportunitiesfirlsinthedevelopingworld.Wecalluponallmunitiestobetolerant,torejectprejudicebasedoncaste,creed,sect,color,religionoragendatoensurefreedomandequalityforwomensotheycanflourish.Wecannotallsueedwhenhalfofusareheldback.Wecalluponoursistersaroundtheworldtobebrave,toembracethestrengthwithinthemselvesandrealizetheirfullpotential.

Dearbrothersandsisters,wewantschoolsandeducationforeverychild'sbrightfuture.Wewillcontinueourjourneytoourdestinationofpeaceandeducation.Noonecanstopus.Wewillspeakupforourrightsandwewillbringchangetoourvoice.Webelieveinthepowerandthestrengthofourwords.Ourwordscanchangethewholeworldbecausewewarealltogether,unitedforthecauseofeducation.Andifwewanttoachieveourgoal,thenletusempowerourselveswiththeweaponofknowledgeandletusshieldourselveswithunityandtogetherness.

Dearbrothersandsisters,wemustnotfetthatmillionsofpeoplearesufferingfrompovertyandinjusticeandignorance.Wemustnotfetthatmillionsofchildrenareoutoftheirschools.Wemustnotfetthatoursistersandbrothersarewaitingforabright,peacefulfuture.

Soletuswage,soletuswageagloriousstruggleagainstilliteracy,povertyandterrorism,letuspickupourbooksandourpens,theyarethemostpowerfulweapons.Onechild,oeacher,onebookandonepencanchangetheworld.Educationistheonlysolution.Educationfirst.Thankyou.
