端午节(TheDragonBoatFestival)

TheDragonBoatFestival,alsocalledDoubleFifthFestival,iscelebratedonthefifthdayofthefifthmoonofthelunarcalendar.ItisoneofthemostimportantChinesefestivals,theothertwobeingtheAutumnMoonFestivalandChineseNewYear.

TheoriginofthissummerfestivalcentersaroundascholarlygovernmentofficialnamedChuYuan.Hewasagoodandrespectedman,butbecauseofthemisdeedsofjealousrivalsheeventuallyfellintodisfavorintheemperor'scourt.

Unabletoregaintherespectoftheemperor,inhissorrowChuYuanthrewhimselfintotheMiLowriver.BecauseoftheiradmirationforChuYuan,thelocalpeoplelivingadjacenttotheMiLoRiverrushedintotheirboatstosearchforhimwhilethrowingriceintothewaterstoappeasetheriverdragons.

AlthoughtheywereunabletofindChuYuan,theireffortsarestillmemoratedtodayduringtheDragonBoatFestival.

AttheendoftheZhouDynasty,theareawenowknowasChinahadfallenintoastateoffragmentationandconflict.WhiletheZhoudynastyhadruledforseveralcenturies,severalotherstates,originallyfeudaldomains,triedtocarveouttheirownkingdoms.ThestateofQinwouldeventuallyemergethevictorandunifyallofChinaunderoneruleforthefirsttimeinhistory.

QuYuanservedasministertotheZhouEmperor.Awiseandarticulateman,hewaslovedbythemonpeople.Hedidmuchtofightagainsttherampantcorruptionthatplaguedthecourt--therebyearningtheenvyandfearofotherofficials.Therefore,whenheurgedtheemperortoavoidconflictwiththeQinKingdom,theofficialspressuredtheEmperortohavehimremovedfromservice.Inexile,hetraveled,taughtandwroteforseveralyears.HearingthattheZhouhadbeendefeatedbytheQin,hefellintodespairandthrewhimselfintotheMilouRiver.Hislastpoemreads:

ManyaheavysighIhaveinmydespair,GrievingthatIwasborninsuchanunluckytime.Iyokedateamofjadedragonstoaphoenixchariot,Andwaitedforthewindtoe,tosouruponmyjourney

Ashewassolovedbythepeople,fishermenrushedoutinlongboats,beatingdrumstoscarethefishaway,andthrowingzongziintothewatertofeedbraverfishsothattheywouldnoteatQuYuan'sbody.

TheModernDragonBoatFestivalstartedfromthattimetothisday,peoplememoratedQuYuanthroughDragonBoatRaces,eatingzongzi,andseveralotheractivities,ontheanniversaryofhisdeath:thefifthdayofthefifthlunarmonth.

DragonBoatracesarethemostexcitingpartofthefestival,drawingcrowdsofspectators.DragonBoatsaregenerallybrightlypaintedanddecoratedcanoes.Ranginganywherefrom40to100feetinlength,theirheadsareshapedlikeopen-moutheddragons,whilethesternsendwithascalytail..Dependingonthelength,upto80rowerscanpowertheboat.Adrummerandflag-catcherstandatthefrontoftheboat.Beforeadragonboatenterspetition,itmustbe"broughttolife"bypaintingtheeyesinasacredceremony.Racescanhaveanynumberofboatspeting,withthewinnerbeingthefirstteamtograbaflagattheendofthecourse.AnnualracestakeplacealloverChina,HongKong,Macao,Taiwan,andotheroverseasChinesemunities.

TheexactoriginsofDuanWuareunclear,butoraditionalviewholdsthatthefestivalmemorializestheChinesepoetQuYuan(c.340BC-278BC)oftheWarringStatesPeriod.HemittedsuicidebydrowninghimselfinariverbecausehewasdisgustedbythecorruptionoftheChugovernment.Thelocalpeople,knowinghimtobeagoodman,decidedtothrowfoodintotherivertofeedthefishsotheywouldnoteatQu'sbody.Theyalsosatonlong,narrowpaddleboatscalleddragonboats,andtriedtoscarethefishawaybythethunderingsoundofdrumsaboardtheboatandthefiercelookingcarveddragonheadontheboat'sprow(船头).

IntheearlyyearsoftheChineseRepublic,DuanWuwasalsocelebratedas"Poets'Day,"duetoQuYuan'sstatusasChina'sfirstpoetofpersonalrenown(名声名望).

Today,peopleeatbamboo-wrappedsteamedglutinous(粘的)ricedumplingscalledzongzi(thefoodoriginallyintendedtofeedthefish)andracedragonboatsinmemoryofQu'sdramaticdeath.
