E-mailtoaprofessorshouldbetreatedlikeabusinessletter–atleastuntilyouknowthatprofessor'spersonalpreferencesverywell.Althoughe-mailiswidelyregardedasaninformalmedium,itisinfactusedforbusinesspurposesinmanysettings(includingWellesleyCollege).Youwon'terrifyouaretooformal,butthereisthepossibilityofmittingmanygaffesifyouaretooinformal.
Thesubjectheadershouldbeinformative.Itisnotasalutationline,sodon'twritesomethinglike"heyprofessor"inthatline.Instead,writeafewwordsindicatingthepurposeofyourmessage:"Requestforaspaceinyourclass,"forexample.

One-mailstyle
Don'tusesmileyfacesorotheremoticonswhene-mailingprofessors,anddon'tuseallthoseinteracronyms,abbreviations,andshortenedspellings(e.g.,LOL,or"U"for"you").Similarly,don'tconfuseemailstylewithtxtstyle.Allofthatelectronicshorthandsignalsalevelofintimacy(andperhapsofage)thatisinappropriateforexchangeswithyourprofessors.
Writegrammatically,spellcorrectly,andavoidsillymistakes.Proofread.Usethespelling
checker.Especiallydouble-checkforembarrassingerrorsinyoursubjectheader.Showthatyoucareabouthowyoupresentyourselfinwritingtoyourprofessor.
Useparagraphbreakstohelpanizeyourmessage.It'shardtoreadalongunbrokenstreamofwordsonascreen.

Don'tusee-mailtorantorwhine.Sometimestheveryappearanceofamessagecansignal"rant":verylongparagraphs,nocapitalletters,nosentencebreaks.Thesearenotfuntoread,andmaywellelicittheexactoppositeresponsethatyouintend.Ofcourse,wearealltemptedtorantsometimesine-mail,sowhatoneprofessorremendsisthis:Sure,rantallyouwantinane-mail.Butdon'tsendit.Hitthedeletebutton,andthenwriteamoremeasuredmessage.(Manyfacultywilltellyouthattheyhavefilesfullofunsentmessages;theyhavewiselylearnedthatane-mailwritteninthefirstflushoffrustrationmustbere-craftedandsentwithcare.)Ontheotherhand,anemailinwhichyoudirectaconstructivelywordedplainttothepersonmostabletoaddresssuchplaintsisjustfine.
